Who We Are

Independent watchdog for justice and the rule of law

IOL — Investigator Organization for Supporting the Rule of Law and Democracy is an independent, non-governmental, non-profit organization documenting rule-of-law conditions and defending human rights in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

Our Mission

Strengthening the rule of law through research, training, and advocacy

We work to promote the principles of justice, accountability, and democratic governance by documenting violations, building institutional capacity, and engaging policymakers with evidence-based recommendations.

Our work spans judicial independence monitoring, legal-literacy campaigns, training programmes for legal practitioners, and policy-oriented research on human rights and rule-of-law conditions in the Kurdistan Region.

Our Vision

A Kurdistan Region where rights are protected and justice is accessible to all

We envision a society governed by the rule of law, where independent courts function with integrity, citizens know and exercise their rights, and institutions are held accountable by civil society and the people they serve.

What We Do

Our core areas of work

Four pillars guide everything we do — from fieldwork to publications to advocacy.

Judicial Independence

Monitoring appointment procedures, tenure protections, and case-handling practices across regional courts.

Legal Education

Training legal practitioners, public officials, and citizens on their rights and fair-trial standards under international and domestic law.

Research & Documentation

Producing reports, briefings, and indices that document rule-of-law conditions and inform policy reform.

Rights Advocacy

Engaging policymakers, courts, and civil society to advance accountability and the protection of fundamental rights.

Our Independence

Non-partisan, non-governmental, non-profit

IOL operates free from political affiliation or government control. Our findings and recommendations are shaped solely by evidence and the principles of human rights and the rule of law — not by donor preferences or political agendas.

We are registered as a non-profit civil-society organization and comply with all applicable Iraqi and Kurdish Regional Government regulations governing civil society activity.

Independence

No political affiliation. Our analysis is driven by evidence alone.

Integrity

We document truthfully and report transparently, regardless of who is implicated.

Inclusion

We centre the voices of those most affected by injustice in our work.

Collaboration

We partner with international organizations, courts, and communities to multiply impact.
